Herb's take
Sometimes dinner is a lesson in restraint. Tonight, we're taking a minimalist Italian approach and coaxing maximum flavor from just pasta, butter, olive oil, and a supporting cast of pantry spices.

Instructions
- 01Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Generously season the water with salt (about 1 tbsp per 4 quarts).
- 02Add the pasta and cook according to package directions until just al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup of the pasta cooking water before draining.
- 03While the pasta cooks, heat the olive oil and butter together in a large skillet over medium heat until the butter is melted and bubbly.
- 04Add the paprika and black pepper to the skillet. Stir and let them bloom for 30 seconds to a minute, just until aromatic.
- 05Add the drained pasta to the skillet and toss to coat in the butter-oil mixture. If it seems dry, add a splash or two of the reserved pasta water until the noodles are shiny and lightly sauced.
- 06Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt and black pepper as needed. Serve immediately.
