Instructions

  1. 01
Heat olive oil in a large, deep skillet over medium heat. Add Italian sausage, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned and cooked through, about 5 minutes.
  2. 02
Add diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 3 minutes. Stir in garlic and red pepper flakes and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  3. 03
Pour in the hand-crushed whole peeled tomatoes with their juices. Stir well, scraping any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
  4. 04
Add water, ziti, kosher salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer. Stir every 3-4 minutes to prevent sticking, until pasta is al dente and sauce has thickened, 16 to 18 minutes.
  5. 05
Remove the skillet from heat. Stir in half the basil and all the Parmesan cheese until creamy and well combined.
  6. 06
Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt or pepper if needed. Scatter the remaining fresh basil over the top before serving.
