Instructions
- 01Heat olive oil in a large, deep skillet over medium heat. Add Italian sausage, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned and cooked through, about 5 minutes.
- 02Add diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 3 minutes. Stir in garlic and red pepper flakes and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- 03Pour in the hand-crushed whole peeled tomatoes with their juices. Stir well, scraping any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
- 04Add water, ziti, kosher salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer. Stir every 3-4 minutes to prevent sticking, until pasta is al dente and sauce has thickened, 16 to 18 minutes.
- 05Remove the skillet from heat. Stir in half the basil and all the Parmesan cheese until creamy and well combined.
- 06Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt or pepper if needed. Scatter the remaining fresh basil over the top before serving.
